The Race To 50!

Me and my brother, Mike, were talking one day a year or two ago when we decided to count up the number of different states that we had seen already. The conversation shifted and we decided that we both wanted to see all 50 states. So what did we do? We decided to make it a competition. I think that you are more likely to do things in competitive situations, and a competition to see things that you’ve never seen is a great motivator to actually do it. We gave ourselves some expectations and rules beforehand, like that we wanted to have it done by the time he turned 30 (he is 26 now). Another big rule is that just driving through a state does not count, you have to have a memorable experience in each state (which is why me running out of gas in the middle of Sandusky, Ohio counts in my book).

As of writing this he is at 30 (although he is getting 31 in a month with his trip to Hawaii. Been there, done that, chump!) and with my recent trip to Arizona, I am at 22. Thinking about this race excites me, there are so many things that I want to see. Me and Michael share this “yearning to travel” gene (I definitely didn’t spell that urning first). This trait definitely isn’t abundant in the rest of the family. My sister Andrea would look at the Grand Canyon and ask “can we leave and go to the pool yet” or “ok we saw it now can I get back to the hotel, SVU is on”. Lauren, while not nearly as bad of a traveler as Andrea, is very simple. You give her a Blue Moon and a pool or ocean and she will be fine, but she has more sense of adventure than Andrea.

My ideal vacation right now would be to get some form of transportation and take a ride through Utah to Colorado, down to New Mexico, over to Georgia, and then up to New York. In due time that will happen.
